Biography
As a former student-athlete, Trei Steward continues his Aggie career on the New Mexico State men's basketball sidelines as the strength and conditioning coach. He returned to the program in 2010-11 after a season away. His responsibilities including overseeing the overall athletic development of the Aggie men and women's basketball programs including strength, flexibility, speed and agility training.
After exhausting his eligibility, Steward spent the 2008-09 season as the program's graduate assistant. He was a forward and two-year letter winner for the Aggies after transferring from Northern Colorado. As a senior, he shot 55.0 percent from the field on NM State's first regular season WAC Championship team. In his junior campaign, Steward and the Aggies won their first WAC Tournament title en route to meeting Texas in the NCAA Tournament.
Off the court, Steward was a tremendous success and he became the first two-time Academic All-WAC honoree in the program's history. In addition, he was awarded the Joe and Van Bullock Athletic Director's Medal of Honor in 2008.
Steward represented NM State at the 2007 NCAA Leadership Conference in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. The conference was an outreach of the successful CHAMPS/Life Skills Program and involves nearly 325 student-athletes each year who compete in fall, winter and spring sports in Divisions I, II and III.
At Natrona County High, Steward was a two-time 4A All-State and three-time All-North Conference selection. As a senior, he averaged 19.6 points and 9.4 rebounds while shooting 65 percent from the field. Over his prep career, Steward directed the Mustangs to the 2001 4A Wyoming State Championship and back-to-back third-place finishes in 2002 and 2003. He was also selected for both the Wyoming North/South and the Wyoming/Montana/South Dakota All-Star games.
Steward earned his bachelor's degree in community health in May 2008 and master's degree in business administration in May 2009.
