2006 (SOPHOMORE): Mary English had a significant role for the Aggies as an outside hitter in 2006. English made an appearance in 34 of NMSU’s 37 matches, which included her first collegiate start against Akron in the finale of the Hilton Las Cruces Classic (9/9). In 58 games, she recorded 32 kills, five service aces, and a pair of aces. Defensively, English recorded 34 digs and three blocks. Versus the Akron, English had a career-high 16 digs, which was also a match-high tally. She also collected three kills, an assist, an ace and a solo blocks against the Zips. In the Aggies next tournament, the Jackrabbit Invitational in Brookings, S.D., English set another career high. Against Lamar (9/15), she recorded six kills in just two games for a .250 hitting percentage. In the first WAC match of the season against Idaho (9/21), she logged three kills along with a 1.000 hitting percentage. English posted strong performances with four kills at Fresno State (10/19) and Hawai’i (11/12). She contributed three kills at New Mexico (9/11) and Fresno State (11/16) in only a single frame. In all, English tallied two or more kills in eight matches.
2005 (FRESHMAN): English saw limited action in 2005 as she played in just three matches at the outside hitter position as a true freshman. She finished the season with three kills in eight attempts while posting a hitting percentage of .250. Defensively, English finished with one dig and one block assist. In the first round of the Hilton Las Cruces Classic, English registered her first career kill against Texas-Pan American (9/2) in a three-game sweep of the Broncos. In the opening round of the UTEP Invitational against Troy (9/10), English came off the bench to add two kills and one dig in a sweep of the Trojans. In her only WAC match of the season, English posted one block assist in a 3-1 victory over San Jose State (11/5).
HIGH SCHOOL: English came to New Mexico State after earning four letters in volleyball at Forney High School in Forney, Texas for head coach Joni Walker. With the Jackrabbits, English led the squad in kills, aces and digs each season and helped the Rams to a combined record of 37-8. As a senior, she tallied 570 kills, 397 digs, 87 aces and 70 total blocks while leading Forney High to a second-place finish in the league and a regional quarterfinals appearance. She was named the district most valuable player as a senior and was a three-time all-tournament selection. As a sophomore and junior, she was named the league's outstanding server and directed the Jackrabbits to a tie for the league title in 2002. In 2001, English was named the newcomer of the year while guiding her team to a 10-2 overall record and the Bi-District Finals. English, a multi-sport star at Forney High, also was a three-year letterwinner in basketball and one year in tennis. On the hardwood, English led the Jackrabbits to back-to-back winning seasons as a freshman and sophomore, including a 10-2 mark in 2002. As a freshman, English took second place at the District Tennis Tournament and qualified for the Regional Tournament. Away from athletics, English also excelled in the classroom as she was named academic all-state and was a three-time academic all-district selection. She also earned four academic letters and was a member of both the National Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society.
PERSONAL: Mary Lester English was born in Dallas, Texas and is the daughter of Paul and Rudi English. Her mother played collegiate tennis at LSU. English is majoring in general business.
