SEATTLE, Wash. – It was a tale of two halves for the New Mexico State women's soccer team on Sunday at Championship Field against Seattle U as the Aggies fell to the Redhawks, 3-0, despite a solid performance in the second half.
Â
"The thing was we played well in the first half," said head coach
Freddy Delgado. "Of the three goals they had, two were deflections and one was a penalty where we made a mistake."
Â
The Redhawks got on the board first when Karli White booted a penalty shot past
Rian Nials in the 10th minute.
Â
Rebecca Mazzie had a great look on goal at the 24:28 mark, but her strike was saved by SU's Brianna Smallidge to keep NM State (3-12-0, 2-3-0 WAC) off the board. Shortly after, Seattle U's Karli White netted her second goal of the day with 25:23 on the clock.
Â
The Aggies headed into the locker room down 3-0 after Nials was unable to secure a ball that went past her on a rebound shot from Julia Marvec (8-2-3, 3-0-2 WAC).
Â
The Aggies looked much better in the second half as Delgado adjusted his defense and replaced Nials in goal with
Ashley Martin, who thrived in the second half.
Â
New Mexico State had a scary moment in the 70th minute when
Sarina Stockton went down on a bang-bang play, but was able to walk off the field. Seattle U's Summer Mason was assessed the yellow card on the play as well.
Â
Martin made a spectacular diving save in the 80th minute to keep the Redhawks off the board in the second half and also finished with three saves.
Â
"I thought we dominated the midfield in both halves," said Delgado. "We connected on a lot of passes, but you know when you look at the score sheet those aren't the things you see."
Â
The Aggie offense was once again held in check on Sunday, mustering only six shots compared to SU's 23.
Â
"We had our chance in the first half and a couple chances in the second half, but couldn't capitalize," said Delgado.
Â
NM State now returns to Las Cruces for its final homestand of the year against Chicago State (Oct. 16) and Missouri-Kansas City (Oct. 18) where the Aggies will also honor their two seniors in
Cindy Buraczyk and
Mikaela Haley.
