Georgia Southern NotesSTATESBORO, Ga. – The NM State football team returns to conference play on Saturday as they travel to Statesboro, Ga. to take on Georgia Southern in a 6 p.m. contest. The game will air on ESPN3 and will be broadcast on AM 570.
The Aggies (0-5) recovered three turnovers compared to the Rebels two as they dropped a 52-3 decision to No. 13 Ole Miss on Oct. 10. NM State grabbed two fumble recoveries, both on punt returns, and one interception during the afternoon contest. Long snapper
Andrew Kenney and defensive back
Jacob Nwangwa each collected a fumble recovery and
Terrill Hanks stepped in front of Chad Kelly's pass to get his second interception of the season.
"Our kids played really hard," said head coach
Doug Martin. "We played an elite football team, and they have more weapons than we do right now. Our quarterback situation is a work in progress right now, but we have seven football games coming up in the Sun Belt and we're good enough to win all seven of them. We just have to prepare the right way and solve the quarterback thing."
Quarterback
Nick Jeanty had his first start as an Aggie against the Rebels. He completed 12-of-23 passes for 86 yards. Jeanty also rushed seven times for 22 yards. With these rushing yards, Jeanty now has 39 yards over 12 carries on the season.
Quarterback
Andrew Allen went 10-for-14 on the afternoon for 55 yards and collected four yards on six rushes. This was the first game of the season Allen played in.
In addition to his fumble recovery, Nwangwa had a career-high 11 tackles against Ole Miss. He currently ranks fifth on the team in tackles with 34 through five games. This includes 21 unassisted tackles, 13 assisted tackles and 1.0 tackles for loss. Nwangwa also had an interception returned for a touchdown against UTEP.
Next week's opponent, Georgia Southern, is coming off of their first bye week. The Eagles last faced ULM in Monroe on Oct. 3 as they captured a 51-31 victory. Matt Breida led the offensive efforts with 149 yards and two touchdowns on 19 rushing attempts.
The Eagles hold a 1-0 advantage in the series with NM State following a 36-28 victory in Las Cruces on Oct. 4, 2014. The Aggies jumped out to a 14-0 lead, but Georgia Southern used 405 rushing yards to capture the victory.
