EDINBURG, Texas – Despite a late goal by
Devin Hart, the NM State women's soccer team walked away with a 2-1 loss at UT Rio Grande Valley in its final game of the regular season in Western Athletic Conference play.
Â
The Aggies finished the regular season 5-14-0 and 4-6-0 in conference play. The four wins in WAC play ties the 2009 squad for most wins in conference history for the program.
Â
"We didn't come out with the energy we needed," head women's soccer coach
Freddy Delgado said. "Once UTRGV got their goal, we picked up our tempo, played very well, creating several opportunities and dominated at times."
Â
The first half was pretty quiet for both teams. Despite the Vaqueros outshooting the Aggies 11-4 in the first half, all four shots for NM State forced UTRGV keeper Erica Gonzalez to make play.
Â
Marcela Ramirez put UTRGV (5-11-3, 3-7-0 WAC) on the board first at the 49:48 mark when she picked up on a loose ball in the box.
Â
The Vaqueros then extended their lead, 2-0, in the 68th minute when Andreya Barrera found Kelzy Jepsen at the top of the box.
Â
Hart cut the Aggie deficit to 2-1 when she booted in a ball off of a rebound after Gonzalez came out to block the ball.
Â
With time still remaining, NM State was not able to score the equalizer and fell in a final score of 2-1.
Â
"I think overall we were looking past tonight's game and focused on the WAC Tournament," Delgado said. "We had several players who did well tonight and are looking forward to making a run next week."
Â
