LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State Aggies got double-digit scoring from four players and a season-high 10 blocked shots on the way to an 80-62 victory over Chicago State Saturday night at the Pan American Center.
Â
The Aggies (11-8, 3-1) won their 30th consecutive Western Athletic Conference home game, while the Cougars (4-16, 0-4) suffered their 16th straight road loss.
Â
"I was happy about the overall effort," said NM State head coach
Marvin Menzies. "(CSU) is the type of team that never gives up and keeps coming at you, and it was good to get a convincing win over them."
Â
The Aggies were led by the strong play of sophomore
Pascal Siakam. The 6-9 forward from Douala, Cameroon, posted his NCAA leading 17th double-double with his 21 points and 13 rebounds. It was his 24th career double-double.
Â
Siakam also led the Aggies' block party with three blocked shots as he became the seventh player in NM State history to collect 100 blocks, now with 102. He also chalked up his WAC leading 41st swat for the season.
Â
Sophomore
Johnathon Wilkins scored a career-high 13 points. The 6-10 forward from Lille, France hit all four of his shots from the floor and was 5-of-8 from the foul line with six rebounds.
Â
Sophomore
Matt Taylor also scored a career-high 11 points. The 6-5 guard from Toronto, Ontario, Canada also notched a career-high three blocked shots and just missed a career-best with eight boards.
Â
Redshirt freshman
Sidy Ndir of Cosne-Cours-sur-Loire, France came off the bench with 10 points.
Â
Chicago State got 13 points from Kieran Woods, while Fred Sims Jr., and Elliot Cole each scored 12.
Â
NM State and Chicago State battled through the first eight minutes of the game nearly even when CSU's Trayvon Palmer buried 3-pointer with 11:40 remaining in the first to cut the Aggie lead to 13-12.
Â
However the Aggies ripped off a quick 8-2 run to extend the lead, then posted another 10-0 run to take control on the way to a 17-point 43-26 halftime advantage.
Â
NM State extended the lead to 26 before substituting freely.
Â
"I'm excited about our team's growth as of late," said Menzies. "We just keep grinding it out. Now it's just time to get ready for the next practice, the next possession, the next game."
Â
The Aggies are back on the road next week, making the Pacific swing. NM State visits KeyArena to meet Seattle on Thursday in a game that tips at 8 p.m. Mountain time.
