Aggies Stun No. 23 Texas Tech in 7-6 Win

LUBBOCK, Texas – The New Mexico State Baseball team shocked No. 23 Texas Tech in 7-6 win on Tuesday night. The victory was due in large part to the Aggie pitching staff, who only gave up one run after the third inning.
 
The Aggies jumped on the Red Raiders early as Trey Stine double to left center for the first hit of the game. Dan Hetzel followed it up with a single up the middle, scoring Stine from second. Austin Botello and Mason Fishback earned back-to-back walks to load the bases with two outs. A L.J. Hatch RBI double down the right field line scored Botello and Hetzel. In total, the Aggies started the game 3-0 over Tech.
 
Texas Tech went quietly in the home half of the first, going down in order. The same fate fell to the Aggies in the top of the second.
 
The Red Raiders finally showed some life in the bottom of the third as a leadoff double and a single put runners at the corners to start the frame. A fielding error by Steven Butts on a sacrifice bunt scored the first run for the home team. Two more runs scored on a single. A sacrifice fly scored the fifth run of the inning for Tech. The score sat at 5-3 in favor of the Red Raiders after three innings.
 
The Aggies would fight back in the top of the fifth as Tristen Carranza doubled down the right field line to lead off the inning. A single by Daniel Johnson put runners on the corners. Brent Sakurai's double to left center scored Carranza. Trey Stine's single through the left side scored Johnson. A throwing error by the third baseman scored Fishback. The Aggies retook the lead 6-3.
 
The Aggies would add an important insurance run in the in the top of the seventh off of a Fishback single to left, scoring Hetzel.
 
Texas Tech would tally their last run in the bottom half as a ground out to short would score the runner from third, making the score 7-6.
 
The Aggies would shut it down in the bottom of the ninth as L.J. Hatch gunned down the would-be tying run at the plate on a fielder's choice to short. Trey Stine secured the win for the Aggies as he threw to first to get the final out on a grounder to third.
 
The Aggies are back at it tomorrow at 1 p.m.
