Aggies Drop Doubleheader 14-7, 5-4 to Stephen F. Austin

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Stephen F. Austin 14-7 and 5-4 on Saturday.
 
GAME ONE
 
Stephen F. Austin came out red hot as the first five batters reached base safely, with four hits and one error. Two runs scored on Kyle Thornell's double, but he was gunned out trying for third. The Lumberjacks ended the top half of the inning with a 2-0 lead.
 
The Aggies went quietly with no hits, a walk and a fielder's choice in the home half.
 
SFA score another run in the top of the third as a single up the middle scored a run from second, pushing the score to 3-0.
 
The Lumberjacks would add yet another run in the top of the fifth, as a 6-4-3 double play would score a runner from third.
 
The Aggies finally broke up SFA pitcher Eric Nouis' no-hitter in the home half of the fifth as Tristen Carranza would get a single. Unfortunately, that was all the home team would get in the frame.
 
SFA scored two in the top of the sixth, as Slayton Vaughn hit a two-run blast to left-centerfield,  making the score 5-0.
 
NM State got their first runs of the day in the bottom of the second as Brent Sakurai would make it all the way to third on a wild pitch by the third baseman to lead off the inning. Trey Stine walked in the next at-bat, putting runners at the corners with no outs. Dan Hetzel drove in Sakurai with a single through the right side of the infield. L.J. Hatch's fielder's choice to third scored Stine, pulling the Aggies within three runs at 5-2.
 
The Lumberjacks scored one run in the top of the seventh, as a single down the right field line scored a runner from third.
 
The Aggies broke out for a big inning in the home half of the seventh as Roman Trujillo reached on an error, and advanced all the way to third. Brent Sakurai's single up the middle scored Trujillo. Trey Stine hit a triple down to the left field corner that scored Sakurai. Dan Hetzel singled up the middle scoring Stine, and pulling within one run at 6-5.
 
SFA added four more runs in the top of the eighth, as a fielder's choice brought in the first run from third. A wild pitch brought in the second run. A hit batter with the bases loaded brought in the third run. The fourth run came in on a single to right field, plating a runner from third.
 
The Aggies got a run in the bottom of the eighth, as Cameron Haskins doubled to right field, and advanced to third on a wild pitch during the next at-bat. Tristen Carranza's 5-3 ground out scored Haskins from third.
 
The Lumberjacks busted out for three more runs in the top of the ninth, including back-to-back home runs, sealing the score at 14-7.
 
GAME TWO
 
It was the Aggies turn to come out hot in the second game of the twin bill, scoring two run in the home half of the first. Brent Sakurai singled to center to leadoff the frame. Trey Stine then belted a two-run shot to left field to put NM State up 2-0 after one inning.
 
SFA was able to get a run back in the top of the second off of a single to right center, scoring a runner from second.
 
The Lumberjacks would then take the lead in the top of the fourth, with a three run frame. The first run came on an E6 that scored a runner from third. The second and third runs of the inning came on a two-run single to center.
 
The Aggies tied the game at four in the bottom half of the fifth, with Brent Sakurai and Daniel Johnson hitting back-to-back singles. Dan Hetzel walked to load the bases with two outs. Austin Botello's single to center scored Sakurai and Johnson, knotting the score up at four.
 
SFA broke the stalemate in the seventh as the winning run came in on a fielder's choice, putting the score at 5-4.
 
The series will conclude tomorrow at 11 a.m.
