Women's Tennis Captures First WAC Title

The NM State women’s tennis team captured its first Western Athletic Conference regular-season title on Sunday with a 6-1 victory over Seattle U.

PARK FOREST, Ill. – The stars were aligned on Sunday for the New Mexico State women's tennis team as Lindsay Harlas, a Las Cruces native, clinched the match for NM State, giving the Aggies their first regular-season Western Athletic Conference title.

NM State (10-7, 5-0 WAC) finished off Seattle U (9-12, 1-4 WAC) in dominant fashion, 6-1, as it wrapped up conference play undefeated for the first time since the conference had six members.

With its No. 1 doubles team going down, New Mexico State's No. 2 and No. 3 doubles team came through and defeated SU's tandems on both courts. Senior Ashvarya Shrivastav teamed up with Eli Arnaudova this time around to tie things up with a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles.

Chloe Jolliff and Harlas, who won their tenth match in dual play, gave the Aggies the doubles point when they took down their counterparts 6-2 on court No. 3.

With the regular-season championship in sight, NM State reeled off five-straight wins in singles action to notch its eight-straight victory.

The last time NM State won eight-straight matches dated back to the 2002 season when it won 13-straight. The Aggies only recorded eight-straight victories two other times in program history (1996, 2000).

Senior Mia Brandt then cruised on court No. 4 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Sari Kwee before Shrivastav took down Michelle Lui at the No. 1 singles slot 6-2, 6-1. Shrivastav has now won eight of her last nine matches

With the match within their grasp, Harlas easily finished off Kristen James 6-1, 6-0 on court No. 5 to give the Aggies their first regular-season championship.

Erika Castillo Lopez continued the onslaught for NM State as she downed Barbara Carey 6-4, 6-1 followed by Arnaudova's 6-2, 6-3 win on court No. 6.

With their wins on Sunday, Shrivastav and Arnaudova have now won five-straight matches – tying them with Rimpledeep Kaur for the longest winning-streak this season in singles.

The Aggies will conclude the regular-season with a pair of rivalry matches. First up for NM State will be UTEP at 4 p.m. (MT) on Friday, April 15, in El Paso. New Mexico State will then return home for its final home game as the Aggies honor their seniors on Sunday, April 17, at 10 a.m. against I-25 Rival, New Mexico.
