NM State Tops Utah Valley

Box Score OREM, Utah – The NM State softball team completed the series sweep of Utah Valley on Saturday with a 4-2 victory at the Wolverine Softball Field. The Aggies defeated the Wolverines 9-0 and 11-1 in games one and two, respectively, on Friday.
 
The Aggies (26-18, 6-0 WAC) scored four runs and collected three RBIs on seven hits. Rachel Rodriguez went 1-for-2, scored two runs and amassed two RBIs. Makayla McAdams pitched 6.2 innings and had five strikeouts in 22 batters faced.
 
Utah Valley (5-29, 1-5 WAC) scored two runs and had two RBIs on five hits. Bailey Moore had four strikeouts in 32 batters faced.
 
Utah Valley put runners on base in the bottom of the first inning. Brianna Gatlin doubled to left field and Kendall Ohman was walked to put runners on first and second. After Tiana Hensley fouled out to Amy Bergeson, Emma Adams turned a double play to end the inning.
 
The Aggies put a runner in scoring position in the top of the second inning. Victoria Castro hit a triple to right field, but was left stranded.
 
Utah Valley took the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Breezy Roth singled up the middle, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and moved to third on a ground out. Cera Stanley then hit a double to left field to score Roth as the home team took a 1-0 advantage.
 
NM State took the lead in the top of the third inning. Brennalyn Nakamura was walked, stole second and moved to third as Bergeson hit a single to third base. Bergeson stole second to put both runners in scoring position. Rodriguez singled to left field and advanced to second on the throw as B. Nakamura and Bergeson scored on the play. Rodriguez then scored as Kelsey Horton hit a single to right field to give the Aggies a 3-1 lead.
 
Utah Valley cut into the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Brittany Vansway hit a single to left field and Bryanna Fox entered as a pinch runner. Fox moved to second on a ground out and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Dana De La Torre then singled to shortstop to score Fox as the home team cut the advantage to 3-2.
 
The Aggies extended the lead in the top of the seventh inning. Rodriguez was walked and moved to second as Adams singled up the middle. Jasmine Stokes entered as a pinch runner for Adams. Rodriguez advanced to third on as Horton flied out and then scored on a wild pitch as NM State took a 4-2 lead to capture the victory.
 
The Aggies take the field again on Friday as the take on Grand Canyon at 7:00 p.m. MT at Stapleton-Pierson Stadium in Phoenix, Ariz.
