PHOENIX, Ariz. – The New Mexico State women's soccer team saw its season come to a close Wednesday afternoon at GCU Soccer Stadium as it fell to Seattle U, 3-0, in match one of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament. The Aggies finished their 2017 season with an overall record of 9-10-2 and 3-3-1 in the WAC.
The Aggie defense came out strong in the first half, holding the Redhawks to one shot in the first 22 minutes of the match. At the 23:36 mark, Seattle U's Holly Rothering came close to scoring a goal with the one-on-one attack against NM State's goalkeeper Dmitri Fong, but her shot went wide. Possession was very back-and-forth between both teams until the 43rd minute of play when the Aggies fell behind, 1-0, as Laura Hooper shot the ball past Fong to get the Redhawks on the board.
With Fong at the goal to start the second half, Seattle U wasted no time to test the redshirt freshman keeper as the Redhawk's Leahi Manthei attempted a shot that Fong was able to block. At 47:58, the New Mexico State deficit extended to 2-0 when Rachel Bowler made a pass to Rothering and sent the ball to the back of the net. In the 56th minute, Fong made a great block for the Aggies, but Seattle U's Natasha Howe was there to shoot the ball into the net and NM State's deficit enlarged to 3-0. The Aggies had six attempted shots afterwards, but all came up short and NM State succumbed to the 3-0 loss.
