DALLAS, TEXAS – The New Mexico State equestrian team fell to the SMU Mustangs at their meet today in Dallas, Texas. The squad was outscored in each of the four events as they ended up losing to a final score of 16-4.
The day started with equitation over fences, as the Aggies dropped the event, 5-0 (413-367). Up next, in reining, NM State brought the total score closer (362-350) but ended up falling to SMU, 4-1 as the only Aggie point was earned by
Kiley Newkirk.
After a break, each squad returned to finish the day with equitation on the flat and horsemanship running simultaneously. Remington Wilkie walked away with the sole point for NM State in equitation on the flat as the team lost 4-1 (375-331).
The best performance for the team came in horsemanship as
Haylee Schoonover and
Quinn Brandt each earned a point and the Aggies walked away with a higher total score than the Mustangs (308.5-287.5). Unfortunately, the Mustangs still took home more points to defeat the Aggies 3-2.
As the Aggies look to regroup, their next competition will take place at home against the TCU Horned Frogs on Friday, Feb. 24 at 10 a.m. MT.
