LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State equestrian team took on the South Dakota State Jackrabbits on Saturday afternoon at the NM State Equestrian Center. The teams ended up tying in points, 8-8, but the Aggies lost the contest after falling short on overall score (1228-1204.25).
Equitation on the flat was the first contest of the day and set the tone for the evenly matched contest as the teams split the event, 2-2. Remington Wilkie and
Grace McMurry earned the points for NM State.
In the next event, equitation over fences, the Aggies were able to separate themselves from the opponent as they took the 3-1 victory.
Karianna Knezevich, Remington Wilkie and
Madison Brayman each grabbed a point to give the Aggies the lead. Wilkie also earned most valuable player honors in the event.
After a break in the competition, the teams returned for horsemanship. This event was split 2-2 as
Katlynn Crine and
Hallie Padilla each finished with a point for NM State.
The day closed out with reining as SDSU topped NM State, 3-1 in the final event.
Kimberly Ferrante had the sole point for the Aggies. The final contest put the teams at an 8-8 tie, bringing the final down to the overall score as SDSU walked away with the win 1228-1204.2.
The loss moves the Aggies to 5-6 on the year as they split this weekend's contest after defeating TCU on Friday. NM State will look to regroup as they wrap up their regular season at home on March 4 at 10 a.m. MT against Oklahoma State.
