LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State women's soccer team fell to Stephen F. Austin, 1-0, in front of its home crowd Friday afternoon. The Aggies are now 4-3-1 as the 2017 season continues with the Ladyjacks going home with a 3-2-0 record.
The Aggies played competitively against a strong SFA offense, taking three shots at the goal in the first half. Despite the Ladyjacks racking up six total shots, goalkeeper
Ashley Martin was able to keep her opponents scoreless going into halftime.
"I thought our possession was good in the back third and the midfield third," head coach
Freddy Delgado said. "I think on 50/50 balls we did pretty well. We earned ourselves a lot of corner shots, which was good. We have to capitalize on those corners a little bit more, but we earned those opportunities."
NM State came out in the second half looking strong and attacking the goal. Forward
Aileen Galicia took two shots at the goal, along with teammate
Devin Hart who had two shots of her own. The Ladyjacks' Sophia Fondren found an opportunity at the 71:32 minute mark and was able to get her team on the board, bringing the score to 1-0.
"This game was a lot different than the last two games we had," Delgado said. "This one I thought we played much better. Right now we're going to go back and build up our confidence. We'll get ourselves back on track. We just have to keep looking at what we're doing. We swept our rivals and we have a pretty good record at home. Our team has also scored some great goals, so we just have to remind our players that we're a good team."
The Aggies return to action Sunday, Sept. 10, as they host Incarnate Word. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
