LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State women's soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision against Western Athletic Conference opponent Seattle U on a rainy Friday afternoon at the Soccer Athletic Complex.
"If you watch the game on video, it might look like a replay of the last four games," said head coach
Rob Baarts. "We compete with people, play some good soccer, do some good stuff and then our minds go blank and we end up giving a goal away and we just keep giving goals away that we can't afford to give away. If we keep doing that, nothing's going to change."
The Redhawks (6-7-2, 4-1 WAC) took an early lead when Kelsey Vogel sent a free kick from 30-yards inside the far post in the seventh minute. Seattle U nearly extended its lead during a scramble in the box in the 14
th minute but NM State (1-13, 0-4 WAC) defenders were able to block three shots before a fourth went wide.
Then, in the 19
th minute
Audriana Chavez had a chance that was blocked before
Zorena Hazen's follow-up shot missed high. From there, both sides upped the defensive pressure as the score stayed 1-0 heading into the half.
After the break, Seattle U wasted no time in extending its lead, getting a goal from Jessie Ray in the 47
th minute.
The Aggies had a few opportunities to cut into the lead but shots from Chavez and
Katie Martinez were saved in the 52
nd and 55
th minutes respectively before Leahi Manthei found Rachel Bowler who put it away for a 3-0 Redhawk lead.
New Mexico State then got a shot from Hazen but it went wide before Vogel knocked in her second goal of the match off a corner kick in the 83
rd minute for the final tally of 4-0.
NM State was outshot 19-8 on the afternoon while trailing in shots on goal, 4-2. Seattle U took seven corner kicks to the Aggies' six.
New Mexico State is back in action Sunday, Oct. 14, at 3 p.m. (MT) as it hosts Chicago State in WAC play. As always, children 12 and under and students with a valid student ID receive free entry to all NM State home matches.
