Scouting the Broncos
Western Michigan returns 11 letter winners and three starters from last year's team which defeated the Aggies 64-55 in the season-opener at the Pan American Center.
Brooke Salas led NM State with a double-double, recording 15 points and 15 rebounds while
Jeneva Toilolo added 10 points.
Shane Clipfell enters his seventh season at the helm of the Broncos where he has a 99-94 record including four-straight 17+ win seasons. Western Michigan finished the 2017-18 season 18-15 overall with a 9-9 conference mark. They finished third in the Mid-American Conference West division behind Ball State and Central Michigan.
The Broncos opened 2018-19 with a home win over Fort Wayne on Thursday, Nov. 8, 69-61, in their season-opener. WMU got 17 points from Leighah-Amori Wool while Jasmyn Walker recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
As a team, the Broncos shot 25-59 (33.9%) from the field while shooting 10-29 (34.5%) from three. Western Michigan was out-rebounded by the Mastodons 39-38 but only turned it over 13 times to 17 for Fort Wayne.
First Time Out
A few Aggies had strong showings in their debuts in the Crimson and White.
Rodrea Echols scored nine points, grabbed four boards and dished out three assists against UT Permian Basin. The transfer from Trinity Valley CC was just 2-6 from the field but 5-6 from the line.
Nana Sule also had a solid performance in her NM State debut. The junior from Abuja, Nigeria, scored six points and grabbed eight rebounds against the Falcons.
Last Time Out
NM State opened its season at home on Tuesday, Nov. 6, with a 70-38 win over UT Permian Basin.
Brooke Salas led the way offensively for the Aggies scoring 22 points on 10-15 shooting from the field.
Gia Pack notched the eighth double-double of her career with a 17-point 10-rebound performance while
Aaliyah Prince almost notched a double-double off the bench with nine points and eight rebounds. Both
Rodrea Echols and
Nana Sule had strong games in their Aggie debuts with Echols tallying nine points, four rebounds and three assists while Sule scored six points and pulled down eight boards.
As a team, the Aggies shot 26-59 (44.1%) but only shot 1-14 from three. NM State's defense held UT Permian Basin to just 26.9% (14-52) shooting from the floor. They outrebounded the Falcons 47-25 and made 17-of-21 foul shots on the night.
