NM State head women’s tennis coach Emily Wang bolstered her roster for next season with the signing of Bella Nguyen.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – New Mexico State head women's tennis coach Emily Wang bolstered her roster for the 2019-20 campaign with the signing of Bella Nguyen on Monday.

Nguyen (pronounced new-en) is the second signee with NM State for next season, joining Lucija Josipovic. A three-star recruit out of Long Beach, Calif., according to TennisRecruiting.com, Nguyen has tons of tournament experience against top-players around the country while also boasting a UTR of 9.0.

"I am thrilled and excited to have Bella join our family for the 2019 season," said Wang. "She is a fierce competitor and will be an asset to our team with her solid fundamentals and consistency on the court."

Nguyen is currently at Wilson High School for her senior season. The savvy righty had a perfect 29-0 mark in singles this fall under the direction of Keri McBride before finishing the 2018 campaign as a California Interscholastic Federation Semifinalist (third-place) in singles. She was also 16-1 in league play and was named the team MVP while also taking home All-Moore League honors in singles.

She's also set to receive the 2019 Athlete of the Year award on Jan. 28, 2019, by the Long Beach Century Club, the same exact award given to the legendary Billie Jean King back in 1963.

Prior to her move to the Golden State, Nguyen played tennis for Daniel Marshall at A&M Consolidated High School and led her team to a semifinal appearance in the state tournament before reaching the quarterfinals in mixed doubles. The 5-3 righty was named the team MVP for the second-straight year. As a freshman, Nguyen also led the Tigers to a semifinal appearance at the state tournament while also earning a quarterfinal appearance in doubles.

In addition to her excellence on the court, Nguyen is also owns a 4.0 GPA (unweighted) and plans to major in government at New Mexico State.
