Women's Tennis Opens WAC Play in Edinburg

The NM State women’s tennis team remains on the road as it opens WAC play on Saturday.

EDINBURG, Texas – The New Mexico State women's tennis team continues its spring break road swing in the state of Texas as it travels south to Edinburg, Texas, for the start of Western Athletic Conference play this Saturday and Sunday.
 
First up for the Aggies in the WAC cluster on Saturday, March 24, will be the Cougars of Chicago State with an 8 a.m. first serve. Chicago State is 4-13 overall on the season and 1-1 when playing on a neutral court. Prior to facing the Aggies, the Cougars are scheduled to face NM State's Sunday foe, Grand Canyon on Friday, March 23.
 
Maryia Kostyuk and Iesha Sheperd lead all players with nine wins apiece in singles play while Katarina Drazic checks in with eight and Leshia Gadacz with six. In doubles action, Chicago State's No. 2 team of Lorea Gamboa and Gadacz are 11-5 overall on the year and 10-3 in dual play.
 
The following day, NM State takes the court for an 8 a.m. (MT) first serve against GCU at the Orville Cox Tennis Center on Sunday, March 25. The Lope are 5-10 overall on the season and 3-4 when playing on neutral courts.
 
Kylie Waschuk paces the trio of GCu players with double-digit wins in singles play, checking in at 15-10 overall and 9-4 in dual play – both of which are a team-high. Emilia Occhipinti is second on the team with 11 wins while Celina Buhr rounds it out with 10 wins to her name.
 
In doubles play, the team of Lana Rinaldi and Occhipinti lead the team with a 10-7 record while Autum Prudhomme and Martina Lo Pumo are 7-7 on the year.
 
New Mexico State then returns to the NM State Tennis Center after the WAC-opener for a 10 a.m. contest against Battle of I-25 rival New Mexico on Friday, March 30.
