Green Reaches Milestone in Big Rivalry Win

NM State baseball took down Battle of I-25 rival UNM 9-1 on Tuesday and head coach Brian Green earned his 100th win with the Aggies.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The New Mexico State baseball team traveled to Santa Ana Star Field for the first installment of the Battle of I-25 against in-state rival New Mexico on Tuesday night. A two-out rally in the second inning gave the Aggies a large lead that led to a 9-1 victory over the Lobos. The win marked the 100th career victory during head coach Brian Green's tenure at NM State.

Following the milestone victory Green commented, "Getting 100 wins is a monumental thing and doing it against the Lobos is even more special. We have sputtered a bit on the road but the way we played tonight got us our fourth win in a row away from home. We pitched really well, played good defense and put in some quality at-bats, so it was a great effort from these guys tonight against the Lobos."

Scoring began early and often for NM State (20-13) with Logan Ehnes driving in a run on a single to center in the first inning for a 1-0 Aggie lead to start. Justin Dehn started on the mound and got to work against the UNM (12-18-1) lineup beginning his scoreless outing.

The Aggie offense then came out in the top of the second and continued the scoring with a big two-out rally. Marcus Still opened the onslaught with a triple to left center to bring in the first run of the frame. Joey Ortiz followed that up with an RBI single to right and NM State had runners on the corners.

Trey Stine continued the two-out rally with a single up the middle to score the man from third and give the Aggies their fourth run of the inning. With two men on, Caleb Henderson was hit by a pitch to load the bases. This saw NM State go around the order when Tristen Carranza stepped to the plate and laced a single through the right side to score a pair and give the Crimson & White a 7-0 lead through two.

Then in the top of the third, the Aggies once again crossed the plate to expand their lead. A sacrifice bunt from Logan Bottrell put a runner 90 feet from home. In the next at-bat, a wild pitch brought in the man from third and NM State led UNM 8-0.

Despite being held scoreless over the next two innings, the Aggies offensive production got them back on the board in the sixth. With two outs in the inning, Bottrell knocked a single to left to score the man from second and give NM State a 9-0 lead. This base knock also made the Aggies 10-for-15 from the dish having scored eight runs with two outs.

The relief effort from the bullpen stood strong for the Aggies quieting any thoughts of a comeback for the Lobos. An RBI single got UNM on the board in the ninth but that would be all the opponent could muster up as NM State cruised to a 9-1 victory.

At the plate, the Aggies outhit the Lobos 15-7 and saw all nine batters register a hit with five recording multiple base knocks on the night. Justin Dehn earned the win after throwing 5.0 shutout innings and allowing just two hits.

New Mexico State now returns home on a four-game winning streak as the team hosts Western Athletic Conference challenger Chicago State for a three-game series, April 13-15, at Presley Askew Field.
