Kizer Golden in Aggie Victory

Corey Kizer scored the golden goal in overtime to take down WAC rival CSU Bakersfield 1-0.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Corey Kizer scored the golden goal in overtime as the Aggies took down Western Athletic Conference foe CSU Bakersfield, 1-0, at the Soccer Athletic Complex on Friday afternoon.
The match started with CSU Bakersfield (7-8-1, 2-3-0 WAC) on the attack as they recorded four shots by the 17th minute. The Runners almost got on the board in the 20th but Dmitri Fong was there to make the save.

The two sides then locked down defensively, with just two more shots recorded before the 36th minute. Then, NM State (2-11-2, 1-4-0) almost got on the board but Jody Hernandez's free kick to the top corner in the 36th minute was saved by Andrea Neves and the two teams went into the half tied at zero.

The Runners then recorded a shot on goal in the 54th but Fong was there for the save. Then, Hannah Leitner had a solid opportunity but her shot from the top of the box was blocked by a Bakersfield defender. Then, in the 73rd minute, Emma Smith played a ball into Sarah Trent but Trent's finish was stopped by a diving Neves.

The next real scoring opportunity for either side came in the 79th minute but Fong was there to make the save. Alexa Barrera had a chance off a free kick in the 82nd minute but her try was again saved and the two teams headed for overtime.

The overtime period began uneventfully with both defenses locked in as they had been all match. Then, in the 95th minute, Annalise Pacheco ripped a free kick from near the midline that bounced and went off the crossbar before Kizer was able to guide it into the back of the net for the golden goal and a 1-0 Aggie win. That was Kizer's third goal of the season and the first assist of Pacheco's career. The Aggies finished the match with nine shots to 12 for the Runners but put four shots on frame to just three for the Runners. Both sides took two corner kicks while CSU Bakersfield was called for 17 fouls to 13 for New Mexico State.
