WAC Champion Aggies Wrap Up Regular Season at Home

Aggies welcome Chicago State and Kansas City to finish regular-season slate.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The 2019 Western Athletic conference regular-season champion New Mexico State volleyball team finishes up the regular season in Las Cruces with a pair of home matches against Chicago State on Thursday, Nov. 14, at 12 p.m., and Kansas City on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 1 p.m.

Champs
With a 25-22, 25-20, 25-22, sweep at Grand Canyon on Nov. 9, NM State clinched the WAC regular-season championship. This is the fourth regular-season title in the last five seasons for the Aggies and the sixth WAC championship under Mike Jordan.
 
With You in the Middle
As the Aggies rack up the wins, it's in no small part to the middle blocker duo of Megan Hart and Julianna Salanoa. Hart, a redshirt senior, ranks 17th nationally in hitting percentage at .404. Salanoa has been unstoppable defensively as she ranks 18th nationally in total blocks (127) and 12th nationally in blocks per set (1.40).
 
D Up
Heading into this weekend's matches, the Aggies rank top-10 in number of defensive statistical categories. NM State checks in at seventh in total blocks (271.0), third in blocks per set (2.98) and ranks second in the nation in opponent hitting percentage (.111).
 
Scouting the Cougars
Chicago State enters Thursday's match in last place in the conference standings with a 5-24 overall record and a 1-13 record in WAC play. In Chicago on Oct. 19, the Aggies swept the cougars 25-22, 25-18, 25-18, behind 11 kills each from Savannah Davison and Cat Kelly.
 
The cougars have struggles offensively this season, hitting just .139 as a team. They have also struggled to stop other teams with a .236 opponent hitting percentage. Individually, Megan Klavitter leads the WAC in digs per set (5.18).
 
A Look at the Roos
Kansas City currently holds a 15-9 overall record and an 11-3 record in the WAC. The Aggies took down Kansas City 25-21, 25-18, 13-25, 25-18, on Oct. 17. Savannah Davison hit 16 kills with Cat Kelly adding 14. Julianna Salanoa and Ashley Anselmo both recorded five blocks.
 
The Roos are solid offensively, ranking third in the WAC in hitting percentage (.235) while they are middle of the pack defensively with opponents hitting .209 against them, fifth in the WAC. Kansas City boasts one of the best setters in the conference as Alli Schomers leads the WAC in assists per set with 10.20.
 
Up Next
The Aggies head to Orem, Utah, as the one seed for the WAC Tournament from Thursday, Nov. 21, until Saturday, Nov. 23. NM State will look to defend its 2018 WAC Tournament championship.
