ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The
New Mexico State track and field team took on top competition at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic on Friday at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
Taniya Mitchell headlined the squad's performance as she posted a new program record in the weight throw.
Mitchell recorded a mark of 18.77m (61-7) taking home first in the event while also rewriting the NM State record books. Mitchell previously threw 18.70m (61-4) on her fourth attempt, which also would have put the senior atop the records, but bested the mark on her final attempt. Coming into the meet, she sat in third for the New Mexico State's indoor list following a personal record set in the Aggies' season opener.
Following Mitchell in the event standings were
Bristol O'Connor (16.95m, 55-7.5) and
Yemisi Oroyinyin (16.30m, 53-5.75), who placed fifth and sixth, respectively. In the high jump,
Keyarha Wilson finished in eight when she cleared 1.61m (5-3.25).
On the track,
Elizabeth Mendoza finished 15
th in the unseeded 400m dash when she clocked in at 58.84.
Asjah Wallace followed closely behind in 19
th when she posted a time of 59.71. In the 200m,
Lanie Whelpley clocked in at 25.43 for 29
th place.
Takiyah Johnson (25.48) and
Lashira Tremble (25.49) followed in 31st and 32nd, respectively.
In the 3,000m,
Julia Yescas came away with ninth when she clocked in at 10:27.37. The time was also a personal record for the junior.
Crissey Amberg posted a time of
10:38.92, which was good for 14th place.
Saturday's events start at 10 a.m. MT with the women's shot put and the first running event of the day is the 60m hurdles at 10:15 a.m. Fans can follow along with the action at
