LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State track and field team travels to Boise, Idaho, for the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships. The two-day meet is set to take place at the Ford Idaho Center from Feb. 22-23.
Heading into the meet, NM State was picked to finish third by the league's head coaches. The Lopes of GCU were picked as the favorites in the women's side, earning five first place votes and 47 points overall. Utah Valley was selected to finish second with 40 points and two first place votes. The Aggies received 39 points and one first place vote. UT Rio Grande Valley came in at fourth with 31 points and Kansas City followed at 28 points. Seattle U tallied 16 points for the sixth-place slot and CSU Bakersfield was next in seventh with 13 points. Chicago State rounded out the poll with ten points
Individually,
Keosha Sanders posts the top time for the 60m, coming in at 7.50, which is also a program record. Teammate
Brooke Wallace holds the best 200m time in the conferment, running 24.56. The 4x400m relay team of
Asjah Wallace,
Lanie Whelpley,
Camira Haughton and B. Wallace recorded a time of 3:41.61 earlier this season and the time currently leads the conference in the race.
Crissey Amberg currently sits in second on the WAC performance list for the mile as the senior's best time this season in the event is 4:53.39.
For the field events,
Yemisi Oroyinyin and
Taniya Mitchell hold the top marks in the weight throw. Both athletes bested the school record this season with Mitchell throwing 18.77m (61-7) before Oroyinyin took the top spot when she threw 20.16m (66-1.75).
Hannah Smith's jump of 12.27m (40-3.25) in the triple jump ranks second in the conference.
The championship meet begins with pentathlon events starting at 9 a.m. MT. Field events for the women begin at 2:30 p.m. with the triple jump. Running events start with the women's mile at 3 p.m. Fans can follow along on with all the action at the
