NEW ORLEANS – New Mexico State men's tennis sophomore
Louis Menard rallied down 4-0 in the third set to clinch the match for the Aggies against New Orleans in thrilling fashion 4-3.
Â
Doubles action didn't start where NM State wanted with Menard and
Enrique Asmar falling 6-3 on court No. 2 followed by
Nicolas Buitrago and
Luis Flores dropping their match on court No. 3 6-4.
Â
Senior
Mauri Benitez gave the Aggies (8-8) a boost in singles action with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over the Privateers' (6-9) Samuel Armand at the No. position. Playing without
Stijn de Haan in the line-up, freshman
Martin Simecek took on the role at the top singles slot and played well but ultimately fell 6-3, 6-4.
Â
Down 2-1, Buitrago tied things back up to take down Nicolas Kramer on court No. 5 after falling in the first set to win 1-6, 6-1, 6-3. The back-and-forth scoring continued with Asmar dropping his match at the No. 4 position 6-4, 6-4 before Flores tied things back up again at 3-3. Like Buitrago, Flores was down one set before rallying to bounce his counterpart on court No. 6 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Â
Trailing by a set, Menard battled back to take the second set. The junior then fell behind early 4-0 in the final set before furiously rallying to overtake Misha Fomenkov and clinch the point for New Mexico State with a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory.
Â
The Aggies stay on the road and will play Nicholls State on Tuesday, March 26, at 1 p.m. (MT) before returning home to host the first WAC pod beginning on Friday, March 29.
