LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State men's tennis team cruised in its match Saturday morning at the NM State Tennis Center as it defeated Chicago State, 6-1.
Nicolas Buitrago and
Luis Flores opened the match up with a 6-1 win over their counterparts on court No. 3 by score of 6-1 before
Louis Menard and
Enrique Asmar clinched the point for NM State with a 6-2 win at the No. 2 slot for their 13th victory as a pair overall.
Singles play started off well for New Mexico State (11-8, 2-0 WAC) with Buitrago besting his foe 6-0, 6-3 on court No. 6 for his fourth-straight win and an early 2-0 lead.
Stijn de Haan then made it a 3-0 advantage for the Aggies after he defeated Jakov Suler of Chicago State 6-4, 6-1 at the top singles position.
Menard became the first Aggie to reach the 20 win plateau after he took down Felix Savard 6-3, 6-2 on court No. 2. The sophomore has now won five-straight, the longest streak on the team, and seven of his last 10 matches.
With the match clinched after Menard's win, Chicago State (3-15, 0-1 WAC) picked up lone point when Gonzalo Martinez rallied back to best
Mauri Benitez 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-5) in a tiebreaker. However, the Aggies won the other tiebreaker in the match when
Martin Simecek rallied back down 4-0 in the tiebreaker for the 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6) victory, his first in conference play, to give New Mexico State the 6-1 win over the Cougars.
The Aggies will wrap up their hosting duties with a 1p.m. (MT) match against Kansas City on Sunday, March 31, at the NM State Tennis Center. As always, men's and women' tennis matches at the NM State Tennis Center are free for all fans.
