The NM State men’s tennis team dropped a tough 4-3 decision Friday afternoon at UC Davis.

DAVIS, Calif. – The New Mexico State men's tennis team saw its rally fall short Friday afternoon as it fell to host UC Davis 4-3 at the Marya Welch Tennis Center in the opening match of the Golden State Invitational.

UCD took the doubles point with wins on court No. 1 and court No. 3. Playing at the top spot for the first time, Louis Menard and Enrique Asmar fell 6-2 before Luis Flores and Nicolas Buitrago were defeated 6-3.

Menard gave NM State its first point with a 6-3, 6-3 victory against David Goulak at the No. 2 slot. Nil Giraldez put UC Davis back on top 2-1 when he bounced Martin Simecek 7-5, 6-3 on court No. 3. The home team extended its lead to 3-1 shortly thereafter when Buitrago fell 7-5, 6-3 at the No. 4 singles position.

Down 3-1, Stijn de Haan got the rally started for New Mexico State when he bested his opponent in three sets 2-6, 7-6, 6-4 at the top singles position. Asmar followed with a three-set thriller on court No. 5 2-6, 6-3, 7-5.

With the match tied at 3-3, Arjith Jayaraman was able to pull away from Flores in the third set to capture the win 6-0, 6-7, 6-4.
