Aggies Fall to Lopes in Golden State Invite Finale

The NM State men’s tennis team fell to Grand Canyon in the Golden State Invitational finale Saturday.

SACRAMENTO – The New Mexico State men's tennis team fell to Grand Canyon Saturday morning in the final game of the Golden State Invitational at the Sacramento State Collegiate Courts.

With possible bad weather on the horizon, Saturday's finale went straight to singles in a clinch format.

NM State went down early when Enrique Asmar fell on court No. 4 to Lucas Grego 6-1, 6-1. Playing up a spot from his usual position, Louis Menard dropped his match at the top singles position to Lorenzo Fucile 6-1, 6-2.

Grand Canyon extended its lead against the Aggies soon after when Nicolas Buirtago was bested on court No 5 against Freddie Grant 6-3, 6-2 before NM State relinquished the match point to GCU on court No. 2.

Martin Simecek was leading in the second set when the match was halted after dropping the first set while Luis Flores was in the third set.

New Mexico State will get a week to regroup before heading North to take on Battle of I-25 rival New Mexico on Sunday, March 17, at 1 p.m. (MT).
