DENVER – With the safety of its student-athletes, coaches and staff members in mind, the Western Athletic Conference Board of Directors announced its approval of updated schedules for men's basketball and women's basketball Tuesday morning.
In addition, the board approved updated conference schedules for men's and women's soccer, women's volleyball and men's and women's cross country to compete in the spring. The WAC also announced a decision regarding its indoor and outdoor track & field championships for 2021 as well.
The updates to all of the aforementioned schedules come as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic which continues to affect the nation. Tuesday's announcement from the WAC affects eight NM State teams including men's basketball, men's cross country, volleyball, women's basketball, women's cross country, women's indoor track & field, women's outdoor track & field and women's soccer.
Complete 2020-21 WAC schedules for men's basketball, women's basketball, volleyball, men's soccer, women's soccer, men's cross country and women's cross country were not made available in Tuesday morning's announcement. Those schedules will be announced at a later date.
2020-21 WAC Men's and Women's Basketball Schedule Guidelines | The conference portion of the schedule will begin on Thursday, Jan. 7, 2021, and will feature back-to-back games against the same opponent at the same site. Each team will host four opponents and travel to four opponents over the course of nine weeks. The WAC Basketball Tournaments are set for Wednesday-Saturday, March 10-13, 2021, at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
2021 WAC Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Schedule Guidelines/Updates | It was decided that the WAC will not hold an Indoor Track and Field Championship in 2021. Indoor Track and Field student-athletes will still be allowed to compete during the scheduled season at institutional discretion.
2021 WAC Men's and Women's Cross Country Championship Update | The rescheduled WAC Cross Country Championship, which will take place on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2021, at Jefferson Park Golf Course in Seattle.
2020-21 WAC Volleyball Schedule Guidelines | Volleyball is expected to begin the nine-week conference schedule in the last week of January 2021 (a period spanning from Sunday, Jan. 24 through Saturday, Jan. 30). The nine-week schedule will be a double round-robin with back-to-back matches between the same two teams at the same site. The six-team WAC Volleyball Tournament is set for Thursday-Saturday, April 1-3, 2021, at the Pan American Center in Las Cruces, N.M.
2020-21 WAC Women's Soccer Schedule Guidelines | Women's soccer is expected to begin on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2021, and will feature a double round-robin with back-to-back matches against the same opponent at the same site. The schedule also features two single-match weeks for all teams. The eight-week regular season schedule will be followed by the WAC Women's Soccer Tournament on Wednesday-Sunday, April 14-18, 2021, at GCU Soccer Stadium in Phoenix.
