LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State football redshirt senior
Jared Wyatt is turning heads with more than just his play on the field.
The Aggie wideout was nominated for the prestigious National Football Foundation (NFF) William V. Campbell Trophy. The award, considered by many to be the "Academic Heisman," is given to a collegiate football student-athlete with the best combination of academic success, community service and on-field performance.
Wyatt, who began his collegiate career at Bowling Green, caught seven passes for 139 yards (19.9 avg.) and a touchdown in his debut season as an Aggie one year ago. He made a season-high two receptions for a campaign-best 42 yards, including a 34-yard touchdown, at Central Michigan (10/12).
The native of Wylie, Texas, entered the 2020 campaign as one of NM State's leading returning receivers. Wyatt, who is majoring in individualized studies, was expected to help captain the offense before the season's postponement due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Nominated by their schools, which are limited to one nominee each, candidates for the award must be seniors or graduate students in their final year of eligibility, have a grade point average of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first-team player and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship.Â
