IRVINE, Calif. - NM State goalkeeper Makenna Gottschalk matched her career-high by making 11 saves, but California Baptist registered a golden goal late in the opening overtime period to earn a 1-0 win Friday afternoon at the Championship Soccer Stadium.
SCORING SUMMARY
99' | With 70 seconds remaining before the conclusion of the first overtime session, California Baptist's Morgan Witz played the role of hero for the home team. Her shot - the Lancers' 25th of the tilt - found its way past Gottschalk to give the Lancers the win. With the ball careering around in the Aggies' box, NM State's defense tried to flick it back toward midfield. Instead, it went right to Witz who beat Gottschalk with a close-range shot.Â
KEY PERFORMERS/STATISTICS OF NOTE
• Gottschalk made sure the Aggies remained in contention for the victory through the first 45 minutes of action. NM State's goalkeeper made four of her six first-half saves in a four-minute span at near the midway point of the opening frame to keep things scoreless.
• NM State was at a 9-2 disadvantage in shots following the conclusion of the first half. California Baptist had it chances on set pieces, too, as the Lancers took a quartet of corner kicks over the course of the initial frame.
• The Aggies' first-half progress was impeded by a pair of offsides calls in the first 2:30 of the league fixture.
• Emma Smith (24th minute), Grace Olson (36th minute), Khari Price (69th minute) and Xitlaly Hernandez (73rd minute) each came up with a shot on goal for NM State.
• Gottschalk's 11 saves are the seventh-highest save total in a single match in program history. It marks her second 11-save performance with her first coming in a WAC victory at Grand Canyon on March 6, 2021.
• Romane Salvador made four saves for California Baptist who won its third-consecutive match.
• The Aggies were outshot 25-8 and suffered their second-straight WAC loss. NM State drops to third in the WAC's West Division standings with the loss, trailing Grand Canyon (first place) and California Baptist (second place).
QUOTABLE | HEAD COACH ROB BAARTS
"We had tremendous effort this afternoon. Our commitment to block shots was excellent. Makenna played fantastic, but unfortunately we fell short."
