Aggies continue action Saturday in Albuquerque

Day One Results

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. –
Chloe Gavino and Lisa Zhu each won singles matches during the NM State women's tennis team's opening day of competition at the New Mexico Halloween Howl event Friday at the McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium.

DOUBLES
• In their first doubles action of the event, the Aggies were pitted against Mountain West foe Colorado State.
• Unfortunately, only one Aggies was able to walk away with a win in tandem play. Hoping to continue their strong play, Harsha Challa and Zhu found themselves on the wrong end of a narrow 7-6 (7-5) decision to the Rams' tandem of Radka Buzkova and Matea Mihaljevic.
• Gavino teamed with Georgia Townsend, but that NM State duo didn't fare much better. Gavino and Townsend couldn't get much going in their 6-1 loss to Colorado State's Somer Dalia-Bona and Sarka Richterova.
• Northern Arizona sent an odd number of competitors to Albuquerque for the three-day event, so Bella Nguyen teamed with the Lumberjacks' Laura Duhl in doubles play. Duhl and Nguyen laid claim to a 6-3 triumph against New Mexico's pairing of Sarah O'Connor and Allison Romero.

SINGLES
• The day started with NM State's set of one-on-one bouts with Northern Arizona, but only Gavino and Zhu could secure wins.
• Gavino took down the Lumberjacks' Sofia Markova by a score of 6-4, 6-4. That win came shortly after Zhu finished off Northern Arizona's Dhul by a 6-3, 6-4 score. With the win, Zhu improved to 7-1 in singles action through the fall season.
• The only other Aggie to win a set in singles play Friday was Nguyen who captured the middle set in her 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 setback to Colorado State's Tracy Guo.
Miranda Bishard grabbed four games from Colorado State's Lucia Natal in the opening set, but would up falling  6-4, 6-0 to her Mountain West foe.
• Challa wasn't able to get a win in singles play, dropping a 6-3, 6-4 decision to Northern Arizona's Lina Dittmann.
• Gavi Kalaga won a total of four games in her 6-3, 6-1 loss at the hands of Northern Arizona's Ava Neyestani.
• Townsend fell by a 6-3, 6-4 tally to the Lumberjacks' Elinor Beazley while Melissa Cartis suffered her second singles loss of the fall. Cartis nearly forced a decisive third set, but instead dropped a 6-3, 7-6 (9-7) decision to Colorado State's Anastasiia Kotsyuba.
