Aggies Set to Battle Redhawks in WAC Tournament Quarterfinal

Aggies, Redhawks matchup in WAC Quarterfinal at Orleans Arena.

LAS VEGAS – The New Mexico State women's basketball team heads to Las Vegas to contest the Western Athletic Conference Tournament Championship beginning with a quarterfinal matchup against Seattle U on Wednesday, March 10, at 2 p.m. (MT).

Quick Notes
• The Aggie defense forces 19.7 turnovers per game, good enough for second in the WAC.
 
• NM State's 12.6 offensive rebounds per game rank second in the conference. The Aggies lead league with a 33.5-percent offensive rebound percentage.
 
• NM State wrapped up the season ranked second in the WAC with a 32.3-percent shooting clip from long range.
 
• Among qualifying players, Aaliyah Prince finished the year shooting 45.8-percent from the floor which ranks seventh in the conference and first among WAC guards.  
 
Scouting the Redhawks
The fifth-seeded Redhawks enter the WAC Tournament with an 11-13 overall record and a 6-8 record in WAC play. Seattle U finished the regular season with four-straight losses. NM state and Seattle spilt a pair of games at Eastwood High School in El Paso with NM State taking the first meeting 64-49 and Seattle U winning round two, 76-69.
 
A pair of Redhawks earned All-WAC honors after posting great seasons. Junior guard McKenzi Williams was named Second-Team All-WAC after averaging 15.4 points per game. Bree Calhoun was named WAC Defensive Player of the Year after her 3.4 steals per game ranked third nationally for the season.
 
What Happens in Vegas…
Since the WAC Tournament moved to the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, the Aggies are 11-1 overall with four WAC Tournament championships. Two years ago, the Aggies won the WAC Tournament while last year, NM State took down UTRGV in the quarterfinals before the tournament was canceled.
 
Bringing Home the Hardware
The New Mexico State women's basketball team earned a number of All-Western Athletic Conference honors with Aaliyah Prince earning All-WAC Second and Defensive Team honors. 
 
Prince, a native of San Antonio, Texas, averaged 12.2 points and 1.4 steals on the season with five games of 20 or more points including 25 at UTEP on Dec. 2 and 22 against Kansas in Allen Fieldhouse on Dec. 29. The redshirt senior finished the year shooting 45.8-percent from the floor which ranks seventh in the conference and first among WAC guards.   
 
Joining Prince on the All-WAC team are Soufia Inoussa and Rodrea Echols who both earned Honorable Mention All-WAC honors. Inoussa averaged 10.9 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.3 steals in WAC play to help anchor an Aggie defense that forced 19.2 turnovers per game. The Stockholm, Sweden, native wrapped up the season as NM State's leading rebounder, averaging 4.5 boards per contest.  
 
Echols, a redshirt senior, was the Aggies leading scorer during WAC play at 12.1 points per game. She also shot lights out from deep, ranking second in conference play with a 48.6-shotting clip from three while shooting 43.5-percent from long range on the season.  
 
Last Time Out
NM State posted a pair of big wins over Chicago State to end the regular season. The Aggies took down the Cougars 73-40 on March 6 before dominating the Cougars 71-47 on March 7. NM State brings a three-game winning streak the WAC Tournament.
 
Up Next
Should the Aggies advance past the Redhawks, they would face a showdown with undefeated and one-seeded California Baptist in the WAC Semifinals on Friday, March 12, at 12 p.m. (MT).
