Albuquerque, N.M. - The NM State track and field team picked up three individual titles and placed 24 athletes on Thursday at the Don Kirby Tailwind Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M.
Yemisi Oroyinyin was the first Aggie to pick up a title on Thursday, as she won the individual shot put title for the second time this season. Oroyinyin had a throw of 15.39m to win the event by just over two meters. The Aggies also took second place, as
Rebecca Green finished with a throw of 13.38m.
Sam Ponds (13.22m) also had a solid showing with a fourth-place finish.
Valissa Brown captured her first ever title as an Aggie in the triple jump. This is the first time Brown has competed in the triple jump, and she posted a mark of 11.69m.
Mia Regan picked up the Aggies' third individual title of the day in the 1500m run. In her first time running the event, Regan finished with a time of 5:01.24. Once again, the Aggies swept the top two finishers, as
Marissa Gallegos finished right behind Regan with a time of 5:10.50.
In the field events, four individual Aggies placed in the javelin throw.
Andi Harrelson (41.64m) finished second.
Bailey Beene (39.48m) finished fourth and
Mariah Humphrey (38.42m) and
Alyssa Covarrubia (35.35m) finished fifth and sixth.
Dascha Robinson continues to impress in the long jump, as she jumped a personal-best 5.92m to take third.
On the track, the Aggies dominated the 100m hurdles, as
Asjah Wallace (13.89),
Valissa Brown (14.04) and
Aliyah Logan finished second, third and fourth in the event. Brown's time of 14.04 was the best of her career.
Lanie Whelpley had another strong showing in the 400m dash, finishing second with a time of 56.77. Whelpley also finished second in the 200m dash with a time of 25.02.
In the 100m dash, first-time runner
Terice Steen ran a 12.22 to finish fifth.
Brianna Gayle posted a personal-best time of 12.23 to finish sixth.
In the relays, Gayle, Wallace, Steen and Logan teamed up to finish third int he 4x100m relay with a time 46.67. In the 4x400m relay, the Aggies also finished third led by by
Israel Swanson,
Takiyah Johnson,
Sheyenne Drake and
Calicia Perea.
Jess Dominguez,
Maggie Gibbs,
Emily Stutesman and
Corinne Hanson will be competing at the Canyon Invitational in Phoenix, Ariz., on Saturday. The Aggies will be back in full for its final regular season meet of the year at the Desert Heat Classic on Saturday, May 1 in Tucson, Ariz.
