2020-21 CoSIDA Academic All-District Women's At-Large Teams
LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Strong on the court, strong in the classroom.
That's the definition of NM State women's tennis junior Gavi Kalaga who learned Thursday she was named to the 2020-21 CoSIDA Academic All-District Seven Women's At-Large Team. As an All-District First Team honoree, Kalaga will advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America ballot. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America honorees will be announced in early August.
Kalaga, who recently wrapped up her third season in an Aggie uniform, is the first NM State women's tennis player since Sandra Mayr in 2004 to earn a spot on the CoSIDA Academic All-District Women's At-Large Team. She is also the lone representative from the Western Athletic Conference across all 102 student-athletes who picked up the honor.
The CoSIDA Academic All-District teams are divided into geographic districts across the United States and Canada. District Seven encompasses all NCAA Division I colleges and universities in Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma and Texas. Kalaga is the second NM State student-athlete to secure CoSIDA Academic All-District honors in 2020-21 after football's Austin Reeves earned a spot on the Academic All-District Seven Football Team.
Through the 2020-21 season, Kalaga was one of the Aggies' most consistent performers as the team played their way to the WAC Tournament championship match. Kalaga constructed a 10-7 (4-2 in WAC play) record in singles bouts during the year and ended the year as the team's leader in singles victories. Alongside teammate Harsha Challa in doubles action, Kalaga played her way to a 9-5 (4-2 in WAC play) mark.
A two-time WAC Singles Athlete of the Week in 2021, Kalaga also latched on to All-WAC Honorable Mention (singles) and WAC All-Tournament Team (doubles) awards once her latest campaign wrapped up.
On the scholastic side of things, Kalaga holds a perfect 4.0 GPA while majoring in government with minors in both business administration and business law. She is one of 31 student-athletes on the CoSIDA Academic All-District Women's At-Large Team who own 4.0 GPAs.
