LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Corey Kizer
scored the golden goal in overtime as the Aggies outlasted Abilene Christian 2-1 for an overtime win in front of 750 fans at the Soccer Athletic Complex on Thursday night. This match was a non-conference match and the Aggies' first night game since 2011.
"Our players have worked so hard to get to this spot and to see people come out and support and cheer and to work hard for them to get us through to the point where when overtime came there was no way we were losing that game," said head coach Rob Baarts
The Aggies (1-0-0, 0-0-0 WAC) dominated possession early and got a great look from Megan Ormson
that was punched off the crossbar in the 10th
minute. The Aggie offense kept up the pressure and Shea O'Connor
had an opportunity to score but the Wildcats (0-1-0, 0-0-0 WAC) again made the save in the 23rd
minute. NM State dominated possession 67%-33% but the two teams remained tied 0-0 at the halftime break.
NM State kept up the pressure in the second half and got two quick shots from Jocelyn Tallent-Burleson
that just missed. Finally, in the 68th
minute, the Aggies broke the tie when an Aggie corner was not cleared by ACU and Xitlaly Hernandez
beat the keeper for the eighth goal of her career and out NM State ahead 1-0. With the goal, Hernandez moved into the 10th
spot on the Aggies' all-time goal list. Then, the Wildcats equalized in the 78th
minute when Christina Arteaga found Natalie Jones to force overtime.
However, the extra period didn't last long. Freshman Thalia Chaverria
played a long ball from the backline to a streaking Jocelyn Tallent-Burleson
who beat two Wildcats and found Kizer inside the six-yard box who then walked it in for the game-winning goal in the 93rd
The Aggie backline was exceptional, holding ACU to just two total shots for the match while NM State recorded 12 shots with seven on goal. NM State controlled the match from start to finish, ending the match with a 61%-39% edge in possession.
New Mexico State now hits the road, beginning a six-match road swing at UC Davis on Friday, Aug. 27, at 6 p.m. (MT) followed by a game at Nevada on Sunday, Aug. 29, at 2 p.m.
