Aggies Blank UIW in San Antonio

NM State runs record to 4-1 after shutting out UIW.

SAN ANTONIO – Makenna Gottschalk shut out UIW and the New Mexico State women's soccer team continued its stellar start to the season with a 2-0 win over UIW in San Antonio on Sunday afternoon.

The Aggies (4-1, 0-0 WAC) were efficient, getting off 1- shots with half of those going on goal. After NM State took a 1-0 lead into the break, UIW ramped up its attack. However, Makenna Gottschalk and the Aggie backline were up to the task and allowed the NM State offense enough time to ice the match in the 85th minute off the foot of Corey Kizer.

Gottschalk made three saves and the Aggie backline affected enough shots that only three of the Cardinals 15 shots made it on goal.

SCORING SUMMARY

26' | A hard foul on Xitlaly Hernandez in the Cardinals' end resulted in an NM State free kick which worked to perfection. Emma Smith sent a high ball toward UIW's net and in the ensuing scrum Brooke Schultz tapped in her first goal of the season to hand the Aggies a 1-0 lead.

85' | Corey Kizer put the game on ice as the Aggies finally broke through late in the second half after keeping the pressure up through the entire frame. Hannah Leitner fed Kizer who nestled a shot in the upper-left portion of the Cardinals' goal mouth for her second goal of the year

KEY PERFORMERS/STATISTICS OF NOTE
• Kizer moved into seventh place on the NM State all-time goals list, netting her 11th goal in the Crimson and White and her second of the season.

• Leitner continued her scoring tear with an assist, adding to her assist totals with her third of the season and 11th of her career, moving her into a first-place tie in the Aggie record books.

• Gottschalk recorded her second clean slate of the season, she also blanked UC Davis in a 2-0 NM State win earlier in the season.

COMING UP NEXT

• The Battle of I-10 on the pitch is set for Thursday in El Paso, Texas, as NM State dukes it out with longtime borderland rival UTEP. Kickoff in the Sun City is slated for 7:00 p.m.
