TUCSON, Ariz. - Junior Garrison Smith used a strong first round to move into the top 20 and the NM State men's golf team sits among the top 10 teams through day one of the Arizona Intercollegiate at the Tucson Country Club.
A late start due to frost on the course Monday morning meant it took an hour longer to get things going. Instead of teeing off at 8:00 a.m., the teams didn't hit the links until just after 9:00 a.m. That late start in turn affected the second round of action. The round was suspended at 5:45 p.m. MT Monday evening due to darkness.
NM State will retake the course at the Tucson Country Club at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday morning to complete the remainder of the second round and to take part in the third and final round of competition.
The Aggies sit in tenth place heading into the second and final day of competition. NM State is one stroke ahead of 30th-ranked San Francisco while Arizona (-25), New Mexico (-14) and Arkansas (-12) comprise the top three teams in the 14-team tournament.
Round One
• A strong push through his final seven holes of the opening round allowed Smith to sit among the top ten following first round. The Texan carded two of his four first-round birdies as well as the team's lone eagle of the round (a three on hole 10) to cap off his solid round.
• With Smith sitting at three-under (69) after the first round, Alvaro Morales wasn't far behind. A team-best five birdies from Morales, including back-to-back ones on holes four and five, helped him finish at two-under (70) which was good for 19th place.
• Joseph Robson finished one stroke back of Morales, penciling in a one-under (71). Robson birdied three of his last eight holes of the round to remain within striking distance of the Aggies' leaders as he sat in a tie for 25th place through the first 18 holes.
• Aidan Thomas shot an even 72 to sit in a tie for 35th place through round one. Matthew Jackman (+4, 76) rounded out NM State's five-man group by placing 69th after one full round.
• Upon the conclusion of the first 18 holes, NM State sat in third place with a 282 (-6). That team score trailed only Arizona (274, -14) and New Mexico (277, -11) at the time.
Round Two
• Smith started strong as he aimed to remain among the top ten golfers in the individual standings, carding birdies on two of his first three holes. A double bogey on his fourth hole of the round, though, negated those early birdies.
• With five holes remaining in the second round, Smith's score sits at a 54 (+1) which is good for a 20th-place individual standings.
• Like Smith, Robson penciled in birdie scores on two of his first three holes of the second round, but a trio of bogeys put his score at 49 (+1) with six holes to go in the second round.
• Thomas had to try and recover from three bogeys on his first three holes in the round. Though he came up with a pair of birdies over his last seven holes before play was suspended, he still remained one stroke over par (+1, 48) with six holes left to go in the round.
• Morales (+3, 51) sits in a tie with Thomas for 39th place on the individual list with six holes left in the second round.
• Jackman (+1, 54) was the only Aggie to move up the individual rankings through the second round. He improved his individual standing by four spots and is tied for 65th with five holes left in the penultimate round.
