Aggies Head West to Phoenix for Bout With Grand Canyon

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – NM State women's soccer heads out for a weekend road trip in their final regular season matches before heading off to the 2022 WAC Tournament in Seattle, Washington. Up first is a battle with Grand Canyon on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 8 p.m.
 
KICKOFF
  • Kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m. (MT) from GCU Stadium in Phoenix, Arizona.
  • The Aggies are 3-1-0 during the month of October, most recently taking down Sam Houston 1-0 on October 15th. 
  • Grand Canyon has been on a hot streak as of late, winning their last five contests by a combined score of 16-3. 
  • NM State currently ranks fifth in the WAC with a 5-2-2 conference record and 17 points. Grand Canyon trails right behind the Aggies with a 5-3-1 record and 16 points.

  • The Aggies out-shot Sam Houston 15-11 with seven shots on goal to the Bearkats four. 
  • This was the eighth shutout the Aggies posted this season, eclipsing the previous record of seven set by the 2011 team.
  • Loma McNeese scored her second goal of the weekend and eighth of the season - the most by an Aggie since Xitlaly Hernandez scored seven in the spring 2021 season. 
  • Bianca Chacon and Bella Garcia teamed up to assist McNeese on the goal.
  • This marked Garcia's first assist of the season and the second of her career. 
  • Bianca Chacon secured her fifth assist of the season and her career. 
  • Makenna Gottschalk recorded four saves giving her 59 on the season. Gottschalk has now recorded 204 in her NM State career.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • The Aggies held steady in the NCAA women's soccer RPI coming in at 113. This is the fourth highest ranking among WAC schools – behind Utah Valley (56), Grand Canyon (104), Utah Tech (106). 
  • NM State is top five in the conference in shots (216), points (81), goals (26), goals per game (1.73), assists (29), assist per game (1.93), goals allowed (13), shutouts (8) and corner kicks (89). 
  • Xitlaly Hernandez is second in the WAC with eight assists. 
  • Loma McNeese is in sole position of fifth place for goals scored in the conference (8).  
  • Makenna Gottschalk ranks second in the conference in shutouts (8), fourth in goals against average (0.87), fifth in save percentage (.819), and sixth in saves (59).
  • With eight shutouts on the season and , Gottschalk surpasses Dimitri Fong for most shutouts in a season, and Erin Wosick for most shutouts in a career (10).
  • Twelve different players have scored goals for the Aggies this season. 
  • 18 of the Aggies 26 goals this season have come in the second half of games. 124 of their 216 shots are also coming in the second half. 
  • NM State is 8-0-1 in games in which they score first.

NEXT UP
NM State will play one final regular season contest on Saturday, October 29th when they yake on California Baptist in Riverside, California. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. (MT). After that, they will head to Seattle, Wash. for the WAC Tournament, which is set to start November 2 and run through November 6th.
