NM State Secures Third Straight Shutout and Hands Southern Utah its First Conference Loss

Aggies go undefeated at home for the first time in program history

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – What a journey it has been for the 2022 NM State women's soccer team. The Aggies secure their third straight shutout and go unbeaten at home for the first time in program history. 

Loma McNeese and Sydnee Johnson both added scores to help the Aggies hand Southern Utah their first conference loss of the season. 

Fans also got the chance to say farewell to the three seniors on the team (Megan Sheehan, Landy Willams and Makenna Gottschalk) as they played in their final home game of their careers. 


SCORING SUMMARY | Box Score

28' | Loma McNeese scored her team leading sixth goal of the season. The score came off a Brooke Schultz cross that was deflected by Thunderbirds goalkeeper Megan Short. McNeese gathered the deflection and fired the shot for first goal of the night. 

31' | Shortly after the first score, the Aggies came back and put another on the board, this time off the foot of Sydnee Johnson. She intercepted the ball from one of the Thunderbird defenders and found some space after some nice ball work. She fired a sent a rocket from the left side and connected with the right side of the net for the second and final score of the match. 


PERFORMANCES / STATS OF NOTE

  • With the win the Aggies improve to 6-3-3 overall, and 4-1-3 in conference bringing their WAC point total to 14.
  • This is the third consecutive shutout for the Aggies and seventh overall on the season. 
  • This is the first time in program history the Aggies record two back-to-back-to-back shutouts in a single season
  • NM State also went undefeated at home for the first time in school history (6-0-2).
  • The Aggies handed Southern Utah its first conference loss of the season. 
  • NM State took ten shots on goal, Southern Utah took two. 
  • The Thunderbirds took eight corner kicks, the Aggies took five.
  • Loma McNeese connected with her sixth goal of the season. The most by an Aggie since teammate Xitlaly Hernandez scored seven during the spring 2021 season.
  • Sydnee Johnson scored her third goal of the season. The most by a freshman since Megan Ormson scored four in the spring 2021 season. 
  • Makenna Gottschalk now has seven shutouts on the season and ten in her career. She also recorded two saves brining her season total to 50.
  • Southern Utah's head coach Kai Edwards picked up a yellow card in the 88-minute of the match.


NEXT UP

The Aggies will hit the road tomorrow and head to Utah where they will square up against another top conference opponent in Utah Tech on Sunday. That one is scheduled to kickoff at 1:30 p.m. MT. After that, the Aggies will have just three more regular season games, all on the road, before heading to Seattle for the WAC Tournament November 2-6.
