Aggies Shine in Singles Play at UTEP Invitational to Close Fall Season

NM State posts 7-1 record in solo play

EL PASO, TEXAS – The Aggies women's tennis team put a bow on the 2022 fall season as it concluded play at the UTEP Invitational on Sunday afternoon.

After struggling in doubles play, NM State bounced back to win seven of eight matches in singles action, including six of which Aggie individuals needed just two sets to earn the win.

DOUBLES
  • The Aggies' strongest showing in doubles play came from the tandem of Natsuki Nishimura and Dora Kurdi who stood tall before falling 7-6 to UTEP's Elena DiBattista and Zuzanna Szczepanska.
SINGLES
  • NM State got back on track once singles matches began as Anna Pinaieva, Natsuki Nishimura, Miranda Bishard, Bella Nguyen, Melissa Cartis, Dora Kurdi and Georgia Townsend each tallied a win to head into the break trending upward.
  • Pinaieva got the best of UTEP's Carlotta Mencaglia as she took down the sophomore, 6-4, 7-6.
  • Nishimura finished her second-straight perfect weekend after claiming a 6-2, 7-6 win over the Miner's DiBattista.
  • The Aggies' other junior Townsend also recorded a victory as she topped UT Permian Basin's Viktoriia Sholudko (6-3, 6-0).
  • Dora Kurdi was the only other Aggie to not collide with a Miner as she took on Tarleton's Clara Sobius who she defeated 6-2, 6-3.
  • Bishard added to the solo success of the Aggies as she scored a 6-2, 7-6, victory over UTEP's Thassana Abrahim.
  • Finally, Nguyen battled her way to a three-set victory over Zuzanna Szczepanska (4-6, 6-1, 6-1).
UP NEXT
The Aggies will now take a moment to prepare for the spring season as they will not return to competition until January 16 when they travel to Tempe, Ariz., to battle with Arizona State. This will mark the start of a 23-match slate ahead of the WAC Tournament, including 14 home meets.
