LINCOLN, Neb. – Stellar starting pitching and an early offensive burst put the NM State baseball team in a good position to pull out a win on the road against Nebraska. With the Aggies leading into the ninth inning, Nebraska used some Lincoln luck to secure the walk-off win and the two-game sweep of NM State.
After posting six runs in the ninth inning against Nebraska on Tuesday night, the Aggies looked to maintain that spark early in the game on Wednesday.
Brandon Dieter led off the ballgame with a single before
Gunner Antillon,
Nolan Funke, and
Kevin Jimenez all drew walks but the Aggies were held scoreless in the first inning.
Leaving three base runners aboard after their first at-bats, the NM State offense refused to do the same in the second inning.
Edwin Martinez-Pagani led off the inning with a triple and scored on a single from Dieter. Immediately following the Dieter single, Antillon followed with an RBI single of his own to score
Tommy Tabak.
Tommy Tabak led off the Aggie half of the fourth with a triple to continue the offense for NM State. With one out in the frame, Antillon lifted a sacrifice fly to score Tabak and give the Aggies a 3-0 lead.
Rorik Maltrud cruised through the first 10 hitters in the Nebraska lineup with ease. Through 3.1 innings of work, Maltrud had faced the minimum before an error ended his bid for perfection. The following hitter singled to end Maltrud's no-hit performance.
The Huskers got a pair of runs in the fourth off of a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly to cut the Aggie lead to one.
With two outs in the seventh inning, the Aggies caught a break via a defensive breakdown by the Huskers. A pair of errors on one play plated a pair of runs and pushed the NM State lead back to three runs.
After closing the fourth, Maltrud retired ten straight Huskers to close his performance for the Aggies. After 7.0 innings of action, Maltrud had allowed just one hit while striking out seven. Just one of the two runs charged to the right-hander were earned.
In the eighth inning, Nebraska got a pair of runs back on a two-run home run. Going to the ninth inning, NM State was clinging to just a one-run lead.
Chasing a run in the final inning, the Husker bats came to life with some timely hits and buried the Aggies. A pair of RBI singles provided the tying and winning runs for Nebraska as they celebrated a 6-5 victory on their home turf.
