Complete WAC Release
DENVER - One of the best doubles teams on the Western Athletic Conference women's tennis scene got its hands on some well-deserved recognition.
In a release issued Wednesday afternoon by the WAC, NM State's top doubles pairing of Chloe Gavino and Lisa Zhu earned All-WAC Doubles First Team honors for the 2022 season.
The freshman/junior tandem piled up nearly half of NM State's 28 total doubles wins in dual match play through 2022, distinguishing themselves as one of the best twosomes the WAC had to offer.
Together, Gavino and Zhu put up a 13-4 record through the dual match season which included an 11-4 mark in top-line action. Against WAC opposition, Gavino and Zhu were 3-1 and their 13 total wins are the most by an NM State doubles pairing since 2019 when Lindsay Harlas and Yadira Rubio piled up a 13-5 mark in line two play.
Gavino, Zhu and the rest of the Aggies are in Beaumont, Texas, for the 2022 WAC Women's Tennis Tournament. As the second seed, NM State is hoping to punch its ticket to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2019. The Aggies' postseason run begins Friday at 11:00 a.m. MT when they tangle with seventh-seeded Chicago State in a WAC Tournament quarterfinal matchup from the Beaumont Municipal Tennis Center.
