Las Cruces, N.M. - CSU Fullerton and NM State squared Sunday evening for the second match of this early season. Both programs came into the game 0-1 after losing their season openers. The Aggies came off a 2-0 loss to Oregon on Thursday night following a heavy defensive battle. The Titans came off a similar loss against #3 BYU which saw the Cougars only score one goal in rout to a 1-0 victory.
SCORING SUMMARY
15' | Fullerton was attacking the entire first half. The Titans out shot the Aggies 11-5 in that first half, but it didn't take long for Fullerton to get on the board. The Titans struck late in the 15' after Karla Rodriguez and Samantha McKenna set up Emelia Owen for the easy goal. Aggies trailed 1-0 .
17' | It did not take long for the Aggies to answer back with a goal of their own. Thalia Chaverria made a huge defensive stop to force a turnover in the box and found Mya Hammack up the middle who took the ball all the way back up the other end of the field. Later in the possession Hammack would float a ball up for Bianca Chacon to the left side of the box. Chacon then headed it to McNeese who was standing right in front of the goal and got the easy touch in for the score. Hammack and Chacon both get the assist and McNeese the goal - game tied, 1-1.
40' | Fullerton was able to put another score on the board right before the half. It was Samantha MaKenna again with the goal, assisted by Kaylin Raibon and Madison Kline. Fullerton back on top 2-1.
82' | Shots were a lot more even in the second half. The Titans only outscored the Aggies 8-7 in shot attempts, but the lead wasn't going to of away so easily. Tough defense and penalties kept the Aggies off the board for most of the second half, but as the clock was winding down, Loma McNeese was able to return the favor to Mya Hammack and found her on the outside, where she got an open look and rocketed a shot up and over the defender for the goal. Score all evened up at 2.
Normally, if regulation ended with a tie, there would be two ten minute overtimes with the second overtime only being necessary if the neither team had scored after the first overtime. This year, the NCAA has decided to eliminate overtime during the regular season and all games still even after regulation will officially go down as a tie.
