Aggie Swimmers Find Podium Twice More on Friday at WAC Championships

Puhalski and Slee add to their medal count

PHARR, Texas – Although the Aggies didn't have quite the record-breaking day it had on Thursday, NM State still put forth some solid efforts to come away with positive results on day three of the WAC Championships at the City of Pharr Natatorium. Entering the final day of competition, the Aggies find themselves in fourth place with 322 points and just seven points out of the third spot.

Lindsay Puhalski opened the day with a time of four minutes and 19.56 seconds in the prelims of the 400 IM, securing her second top seed for finals in as many days. Puhalski would ultimately go on to claim her second individual podium finish and third overall as she finished second with a time of 4:17.53 in the finals.

Later, a strong swim from Naomi Slee in the prelims of the 200 free would help the freshman sneak into the finals as she finished with a time of 1:50.99 – 0.26 seconds faster than the ninth-place finisher. Slee would capitalize on her opportunity as she bettered her time by more than one-and-a-half seconds to secure a third-place finish after reaching the wall at 1:49.38.

A pair of Aggies also made the finals in the 100 back as Thea Masselink and Maude Boily-Dufour finished at 54.96 and 54.98, respectively, to claim the final two spots. The duo would go on to finish back-to-back in the finals as well as Masselink finished seventh (55.37) and Boily-Dufour finished eighth (55.53).

In the diving events, sophomore Casey Schmidt shined the brightest for the Aggies in the platform event as she turned in a score of 200.75 in the prelims to land a spot among the top eight divers in the finals. In the finals, Schmidt would improve her positioning by one spot as she finished seventh with a score of 195.55.
