Aranzabal Qualifies for Zones as Aggies Wrap Up Lumberjack Diving Invite

NM State now readies for WAC Championships.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Aggie divers concluded its final day at the Lumberjack Diving Invite to put a cap on their pre-championship schedule.
 
A trio of Aggies competed in the three-day event in the Grand Canyon State as Italia Aranzabal, Kate Malinowski and Casey Schmidt all took to the boards this weekend. Both Aranzabal and Malinowski qualified for the finals in the 3-meter event while all three Aggies reached the finals in 1-meter event and Schmidt posted her best finish of the weekend in the platform event.
 
The three Aggies joined divers from four other institutions, including a pair of WAC programs in Idaho and Northern Arizona as they began competing in the 3m dive on Friday morning. Aranzabal's score of 246.00 placed her in 14th to be the top-placing Aggie in the prelims.
 
In the finals, Aranzabal turned in a NCAA Zone Qualifying and season-high score of 286.00 as she finished 11th overall. Meanwhile, Malinowski finished in 17th with a final score of 245.65.
 
On Saturday, all three Aggies qualified for the finals in the 1m as Italia Aranzabal landed in seventh, Malinowski in 16th and Schmidt in 19th. Aranzabal would later submit the Aggies' only top-10 finish of the weekend as she finished in ninth with a final score of 264.25.
 
Sunday's platform event also saw three Aggies finish among the top 20 divers as Italia Aranzabal finished in 13th with a score of 195.90 – her best score in the platform event this season. Additionally, Casey Schmidt finished in 16th with a score of 187.45 to also post a season-high and Kate Malinowski tallied a 19th place finish with a score of 163.75.
 
UP NEXT
The Aggies will now prepare for the WAC Championships scheduled to take place on Feb. 22-25 in Pharr, Texas.
