NM State Readies to Kick Off 2023 Outdoor Season

The Aggies took sixth-place at last year's WAC Championships

LAS CRUCES, N.M. –
Three weeks following NM State's runner-up finish at the 2023 WAC Indoor Track & Field Championships, the team prepares to open the outdoor season at the West Texas Spring Break Open, a one-day meet held on Saturday, Mar. 18th. in Canyon, Texas. This marks the first of seven meets the Aggies will compete at prior to the 2023 WAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, held May 11-13th in Nacogdoches, Texas.
 
The Starting Line
  • This marks the first time NM State will compete in the West Texas A&M Spring Break Open, hosted at West Texas A&M Track and Field Complex.
  • The one-day meet begins on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. (MDT) with both the javelin and shot put. 
 
Back Track
  • A majority of the indoor track & field team will compete in the outdoor season.  Three weeks ago the Aggies managed a runner-up finish at the 2023 Indoor WAC Track & Field Championships behind a quartet of gold medals (Weight throw, Long jump, 200m dash, 400m dash).
  • For the outdoor team, this is the first meet since the 2022 WAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, where they finished sixth with a trio of first-place results (weight throw, 100m hurdles, 400m hurdles).
  • Nine Aggies qualified for the NCAA West Prelims (Aliyah Logan, Terice Steen, Thulisile Amon, Maggie Gibbs, Phethisang Makhethe, Jhana Downie, Grace Pendarvis, Sierra Brewer, Asjah Wallace) following the conclusion of the WAC Championships.
 
One Year Ago… | Mar. 18-19, 2022 | Willie Williams Classic
 
  • Last year the Aggies opened outdoor season at the Willie Williams Classic, this year it is the second meet NM state will participate in.
  • Terice Steen took home the gold in the 400m hurdles, finishing with a time of 1:01,16 – Israel Swanson ran a time of 1:04.54 to take fifth in the event.
  • Phethisang Makhethe picked up where she left off during indoor season, capturing first-place with a mark of 61.72m (202'6") in the hammer throw. This was Makhethe's first time competing in the event at NM State.
  • Mariah Humphrey posted her best finish and best placement, winning the javelin toss with a mark of 46.29m (151-10"), a new personal best.
  • Sierra Brewer, Grace Pendarvis, Asjah Wallace and Jhana Downie gave the Aggies their fourth first-place finish of the weekend, winning the 4x100 with a combined time of 45.31.
