Box Score ARLINGTON, Texas – The Aggies live to fight another day.
After dropping the doubles point, NM State clawed its way back to win four of the six singles matches to secure the only upset of the day in the WAC Tournament, defeating third-seeded UTRGV by a score of 4-3 at the Arlington Tennis Center on Thursday afternoon.
With the first-round victory, the Aggies secured a spot in the semifinals where they will do battle with No. 2 Tarleton for a spot in the WAC Tournament title match.
DOUBLES
- Following a short rain delay, the Aggies and Vaqueros took the courts for doubles action. Unfortunately, UTRGV shot out of the gates like they had something to prove as they picked up a 6-0 win at No. 3 and a 6-2 win at No. 1 to take a one-point lead into singles action.
SINGLES
- The Vaqueros quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead once the match split into six courts as they claimed a win at the No. 3 position.
- From there, the Aggies' experience at the WAC Tournament took over as both Miranda Bishard and Bella Nguyen collected two-set wins over their UTRGV counterparts. Bishard, a 2022 WAC All-Tournament Team selection, flexed her muscles by barreling over UTRGV's Barbara Martinez by a score of 7-5, 6-3. Moments later, fellow 2022 WAC All-Tournament honoree, Nguyen, earned the Aggies' second point when she defeated Stefanie Wilske at the No. 6 spot (6-3, 7-5).
- Lisa Zhu then picked up a momentum-shifting win at the No. 2 spot, posting a win over Isabelle Bahr. Zhu dominated the opening set and earned a 6-1 win before edging out Bahr by a score of 7-5 in the final set to put the Aggies just one victory away from advancing to the semifinals.
- UTRGV would not go down without some resistance though – winning at No. 5 to set up a winner-take-all match between the two No. 1 players.
- At No. 1, First Team All-WAC member Anna Pinaieva bounced back to win the second set 6-2 after dropping the opener 4-6. With the match and the Aggies' season on the line, Pinaieva pulled through for her squad with a 6-4 win in the third and final set – sending the onlooking Aggies onto the court to celebrate and into the semifinals of the WAC Tournament for the fourth consecutive season.
UP NEXT
In the semifinals, the Aggies draw No. 2 Tarleton who earned a commanding 4-1 victory over No. 7 Seattle U in their first-round matchup.
