Aggies Venture to Arizona for Final Regular Season Meet

NM State faces final tune-up ahead of 2023 WAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships

LAS CRUCES, NM. –
After a successful mid-week date in Albuquerque, the Aggies will look ahead to their final meet of the regular season, the Desert Heat Classic, hosted by the University of Arizona. The one-day meet begins on Saturday, April 29th, with events starting at 1:00 p.m. (MDT). This meet serves as the final tune-up before the 2023 WAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, held in Nacogdoches, Texas, May 11th-13th; NM State will compete in 17 different events, with seven field competitions and ten on the track side.  
 
The Starting Line
  • NM State is set to compete at the Desert Heat Classic for the second straight season – and their second trip to Tucson of the 2023 outdoor season, following their time at the Willie Williams Classic in late March.
  • Following the conclusion of the Desert Heat Classic, the Aggies will have two weeks off before heading off for the 2023 WAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Nacogdoches, Texas on May 11th-May 13th.
  • Should individual student-athletes hold steady in their national rankings, they will be invited to compete at the NCAA West Preliminaries, held in Sacramento, California from May 25th-27th.
Back Track | Don Kirby Tailwind Open | 4.20.23
  • Jhana Downie competed in the 100m dash for the first time in her collegiate career, picking up a third-place finish after crossing the line with a time of 11.34. Later in the afternoon Downie competed in the 200m dash, notching her first win of the weekend with a time of 23.46 – a new personal best.
  • Makiya Moore topped the field in the discus, finishing with a final distance of 47.67m.
  • Rebecca Green joined Moore on the podium, taking third place with a mark of 39.92m (156-05"). Green later led the competition in the shot put, taking home the gold with a distance of 14.05m (46-1.25").
  • T'Erica Boyd leaped over the competition in the 400m hurdles, setting a new personal best while taking first place with a time of 59.91.
  • Bailey Beene recorded a first-place finish in the javelin toss, her first in her collegiate career, setting a new personal best in the process with a final distance of 48.34m (158-7").
  • Angela Korte recorded her second top-five finish of the outdoor season, posting a time of 2:24.57 – setting a new personal best in the process.
  • Thobile Amon and Vanessa Gracian posted strong showings in the 1500m run, finishing third with a time of 4:41.70 and fifth with a final mark of 5:06.72 respectively.

'Round the Region
  • During the outdoor track & field season, the top-48 student-athletes in their respective regions get invited to the NCAA West Prelims in Sacramento, California (May 24-27th), a precursor to the NCAA Championships held at Mike A. Myers Stadium and Soccer Field in Austin, Texas (June 7-10th).
  • With one regular season meet to go, several Aggies are in position to qualify.

One Year Ago… | Desert Heat Classic | 4.30.2022
  • The relay team consisting of Sierra BrewerGrace PendarvisJhana Downie and Asjah Wallace crossed the line fourth with a combined time of 44.85, setting a season beat time in the event.
  • Thobile Amon nabbed fourth-place with a time of 2:08.80, tied for her best finish in the event and recording a new personal best in the process.
  • Grace Pendarvis recorded a new personal best in the event after posting a wind-adjusted time of 11.67 (+0.4 m/s), Sierra Brewer doing the same with her time of 12.03 (+1.0 m/s).
  • Grace Pendarvis set a new personal best with a wind-adjusted time of 23.86 (+0.2 m/s), taking sixth in the event.
