LAS CRUCES, N.M. – After kicking off the 2024 indoor season at the Stan Scott Memorial, NM State heads up north to the Duke City to compete in the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational at the Albuquerque Convention Center. This is the first of three straight meets the Aggies will participate in that takes place in Albuquerque, with all meets hosted by the University of New Mexico.
Starting Line
- NM State will play out the remainder of its regular season in Albuquerque, continuing a trend that goes back several seasons. The Aggies will only depart the Land of Enchantment when they compete for the Conference USA Championship in Lynchburg, Virginia, scheduled for Feb. 23-24.
- The Aggies will participate in eleven events, highlighted by a pair of 4x400 relay teams and eight student-athletes set to compete in the Weight Throw.
- In addition to New Mexico, other schools to join NM State at the MLK Invitational include Texas, Arizona, UCLA, Utah, Stanford, San Diego State, North Texas, GCU, UC Irvine and UTRGV.

- Jhana Downie bested her 60m mark in both prelims (7.49) and the finals (7.48), Jordan Torres captured gold and improved on her previous best in the 3000m 'B' race, and Makiya Moore tallied a runner-up finish while posting a new personal record in the weight throw (18.02m).
- Makiya Moore's toss of 18.04m (59-2.25") earned her the silver medal, while also moving her up the NM State Record Book – now seventh in program history. Second-year Aggie Miranda Tcheutchoua took third in the weight throw, with a distance of 17.63m (57-10.25") marking her best toss of the day.
- Freshman Kamryn Cadle competed for the first time in the Crimson & White, tallying a sixth-place finish after posting a mark of 16.07m (52-8.75"), and Iysis Tellez-Briggs rounded out the NM State student-athletes in the finals, taking eighth with a distance of 14.90m (48-10.75").
- Jordan Torres and Leah Clark represented the Aggies in the 3000m 'B' race, with Torres taking first place in the event with a time of 10:59.54. The sophomore from El Paso notched her first gold medal finish with the Aggies, while Leah Clark took fourth with a time of 11:15.71.
One Year Ago… | MLK Classic | Albuquerque, N.M. | 1.21.23
- Nearly a year ago, NM State competed in the MLK Collegiate Invite in Albuquerque. Multiple Aggies finished in the top five of several competitions, including 4x400 team of Terice Steen, Jahnya Hill, Jhana Downie and T'Erica Boyd who took fourth in the event and claimed the third-fastest time in NM State history with a mark of 3:42.27.
- Cameron Hodges managed to claim first place in her heat in the Triple Jump with a final mark of 11.35m (37-3"), good for 11th overall.
- In the Mile, a trio of Aggies recorded top-six finishes: Thobile Amon (5:05.47), Emily Stutesman (5:08.89) and Maggie Gibbs (5:10.27) finished third, fifth and sixth respectively. Gibbs set a new personal best in the process. Kayla O'Connell posted a tenth-place finish with a mark of 5:26.80, setting a personal record.
