Delgadillo’s Second-Round Charge Highlights Opening Day of N.I.T.

Aggies in 15th with 21 holes remaining.

TUCSON, Ariz. – NM State returned to action after nearly 100 days away from competition as they began play on Monday morning at the N.I.T. hosted by Arizona at Omni Tucson National. With the first round in the books and the majority of the second round accounted for, the Aggies find themselves slotted in 15th place as a team while shooting seven under par before play was called due to darkness.

Individually, the Aggies were led by Javier Delgadillo who turned his day around in the afternoon as he recorded four birdies and an eagle through the first 15 holes of the second round to end the day tied for 21st and just two strokes outside of the top ten with a combined score of 126 (-5). Delgadillo's scorching second round allowed him to jump 41 spots in the standings after the sophomore posted a 73 (+1) during his first round of action.

River Smalley also took advantage of the increasing temperatures later in the day as he notched five birdies across his final 13 holes of the day. Like Delgadillo, Smalley posted a 73 through the first 18, however, bounced back and sits at a 57 (-2) with three holes left before the final round – this includes the par-four 14th which Smalley birdied the first time he saw it on Monday.

Not far behind Smalley is Anthony Lara who ended the day one over par after dialing up four birdies across a eight-hole stretch in the second round. Vari Mariscal and Alvaro Morales will also look to get things going on Tuesday as Mariscal is currently tied for 87th and Morales is tied for 92nd.
